The Summer House is just one short block along a sandy road from this lovely cottage to one of Lake Michigan’s wide pristine beaches. You can walk the sandy beach for countless miles in either direction. Or never move from your beach towel except to turn over. After a long sun filled day on the beach, shower in the outdoor shower; take a dip in the pool and return to the beach for a glass of wine and a toast to the spectacular sunsets every evening. See the green flash some nights. See the mirage of the City of Chicago across the lake on special nights.

There are at least 6 public beaches very close by:

  • McKinley Beach 1 block away
  • Miller Beach 2 blocks the other direction
  • Berrien Beach, the only one without stairs about 1/2 mile away.
  • Cherry Beach you can drive to and park 3 miles away.
  • Town Line Road Beach 6 blocks away
  • Warren Dunes State Park, 6 miles north
  • What about the swimming pool?

Oh, yes I should be writing about the swimming pool. The Summer House’s pool is heated and has an electronic pool cover for safety and retaining heat. It has a deep end and a shallow end, but it is over the heads of small children. The pool area is surrounded by sofas and chairs and patio tables and lounges. The pool patio faces the very long back yard, fenced in of course, and with a jungle gym fort for the children to climb on, if you can get them out of the pool. The Summer House has sky lights and some cathedral ceilings. The open floor plan makes it perfect for family gatherings. The large kitchen invites everyone to help with the chopping, searing, mixing and dressing of the salads for dinner.

We rented  The Summer House for an extended Labor Day “end of the summer” getaway with our children and grandchildren. We were apprehensive because this was our first time renting. But we were not disappointed. The cottage was perfect. It had books, games, etc. inside and a never rending backyard which was perfect for tossing around a football. It also had a fire pit which we used to toast marshmallows. But the heated pool was the “big draw”, especially for the kids. There were a lot of pool toys and the outdoor furniture was great. There were at least five lounge chairs plus gobs of other chairs and tables. On the deck above there was a table and chairs, great for outdoor dining. The house was open and nicely decorated. The kitchen was update and had everything one could want for cooking. There were also a lot of paper goods such as napkins, paper towels, toilet paper etc. which was really nice. The grill on the deck was right outside of the kitchen and very handy. And towels! I have never seen so many beach towels and they were such nice ones. With all of the kids, we never ran out. And there is a laundry room on the lower level so we could stick a load in and then go out to the pool! It was great. Colleen, who manages the cottage is just next door and was a great help. She came right over if we had a problem and was an invaluable source of information when we needed to know where places were etc. There was a great farmers market about a mile or so down the road on the weekend and we bought all kinds of fresh fruit and veggies for out dinner. The beach was a short walk away and very nice. Even though it was kind of cool, the water was warm enough for the older kids to play in. But the pool was so handy. They used it every day…even evenings. There is a great grocery store in New Buffalo to shop so we did a lot of cooking. We would certainly recommend this cottage to anyone and would like to come back again.

We just returned from our stay 6/27 – 7/1 at the Summer House. We can’t even begin to describe all the great amenities the home offered. The bedrooms/bathrooms were stocked with everything needed – even beach towels. THe kitchen was beautiful and we loved preparing all of our meals for the week there. We had plenty of space to make some great dinners and grilled on the deck every night. We only left the home to walk the short trail to Lake Michigan and to shop in nearby New Buffalo. The kids loved the pool and would spend afternoons there after their mornings at the beach. The outdoor shower is a great addition. The home is so spacious that the adults could spend evenings at the dining room table playing cards and the kids were in family room together – but we never seemed to be “on top” of each other. Colleen who manages the property was very helpful and was a gem to work with. We will definitely plan another family vacation here. All of our kids (ages 12-22) voted this as one of their favorite places to stay and want us to book our week here next summer already. Thank you Colleen and to the owners of the Summer House for sharing your home with us and making our vacation a memory maker!!

My family stayed in this wonderful house and loved everything about it. The biggest decision for us every day was whether we would swim in the pool or the lake just down the road. The heated pool has a diving board and electric cover. There are plenty of pool toys and nice poolside furniture. The house is clean, well maintained, and tastefully decorated. The kitchen has been remodeled and has granite counters and new appliances – very nice. Cook or, better yet, barbecue on the deck off of the kitchen, or enjoy one of the many great restaurants nearby. The house itself is spacious, with a big room downstairs for the kids to play while the adults socialize upstairs, on the deck or poolside. We can’t wait to return!
